Spondylosis is a collective term for degenerative changes of the vertebral bodies, in particular bony outgrowths (spondylophytes) at the endplates, and a reduction in the height of the disc spaces. It most commonly affects the cervical and lumbar spine.
The changes can remain clinically silent or be accompanied by local back pain, restricted movement and, in combination with disc changes, radiating complaints. In advanced stages, secondary narrowing of the foramina or spinal canal can develop. Findings are usually obtained by X-ray, MRI or CT.
