Sports physiotherapy is a specialist field of physiotherapy concerned with the treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of injuries in athletes of all performance levels. The aim is to ensure safe participation in sport, optimise performance and prevent injuries.

Sports physiotherapists work in both recreational and competitive sport. They support athletes individually or in groups who have sustained an acute injury or are recovering from one. In competitive sport, they also carry out specific movement analyses and create tailored training programmes to avoid injuries.

The tasks of a sports physiotherapist are varied, ranging from advice and instruction to the creation of rehabilitation and prevention programmes and the restoration of optimal function after an injury. Not only physical aspects such as strength, balance and coordination are considered, but also mental resilience.

An important component of sports physiotherapy is injury prevention. Targeted training measures and movement corrections are intended to minimise injury risks. Supporting professional athletes in competition preparation is also part of the role.

Sports physiotherapists need sound knowledge of sports science, medicine and physiotherapy. Specialised further training, such as the Master of Science in Sports Physiotherapy at the German Sport University Cologne, qualifies practitioners for this demanding work.
