Circumduction describes a combined movement in which a body part traces a cone-shaped path in space. It results from a continuous sequence of flexion, abduction, extension and adduction.
Typical examples are circular movements of the arm at the shoulder joint or the leg at the hip joint. Circling the foot at the ankle is also described as circumduction. In movement analysis, circumduction serves as an orienting assessment of the entire range of motion of a ball-and-socket or condyloid joint.
