In brief
- Balance of blood clotting: The body needs blood clotting to stop bleeding – with a clotting disorder, however, either bleeding or dangerous thromboses threaten.
- Individual causes: Whether haemophilia or other causes – we adapt your treatment precisely to your medication and your personal risk.
- Muscles as a protective shield: Targeted training strengthens your muscles, stabilises the joints and thus actively protects against painful bleeds in everyday life.
- Preventing thromboses: Active exercises promote the flow of blood in the vessels and can help prevent the formation of blood clots.
- Living safely and actively: At NOVUM2, we support patients with expertise so that, despite clotting disorders, they can lead an active life free of fear.
When the blood gets out of rhythm
Under the term blood clotting disorder, physicians group various conditions that are classified under certain ICD codes (such as D65 to D69).
Fundamentally, we distinguish two directions:
- Increased bleeding tendency (hypocoagulability): The blood clots too slowly. The consequences are frequent bruises on the skin, prolonged nosebleeds or increased bleeding after minor injuries. Well-known examples are von Willebrand disease (a defect of the von Willebrand factor) or classic haemophilia.
- Increased clotting tendency (hypercoagulability): Here, blood clots form too quickly, which increases the risk of thromboses in the veins or vessels.
Haemophilia and von Willebrand disease
In haemophilia A and haemophilia B, the body lacks important clotting proteins.
Since the genetic defect often lies on the X chromosome, classic haemophilia mostly affects men.
Von Willebrand disease, on the other hand, affects women and men equally.
Especially for women, this can be a burden in everyday life, for example through very heavy menstruation or complications during pregnancy.
Recognising symptoms and taking them seriously
The symptoms depend strongly on the particular form of the disorder.
See a doctor (often specialised in haematology) if you notice the following signs:
- Frequent occurrence of haematomas without recognisable causes.
- Long-lasting bleeding after dental visits or small cuts.
- Swelling and pain in the joints (an indication of internal bleeds).
- Functional disorders of internal organs such as the kidneys.
Targeted joint protection: strength training as a shield

Especially in severe forms of haemophilia or von Willebrand disease, bleeds into the joints pose a great risk.
These bleeds can damage the joint structure in the long term.
This is where our therapy comes in: through targeted building of the muscles, we stabilise your body from the inside.
Strong muscles act like a natural protective shield for the blood vessels and joint capsules.
We pay close attention to the dosage in order to avoid overloading, which under certain circumstances could provoke small injuries.
Whether haemophilia A or haemophilia B – we create a plan that takes your individual clotting factors and your current physical condition into account.
In this way, those affected regain security in everyday life and increase their quality of life without having to fear every step.
Thrombosis prophylaxis: promoting the flow of blood
While some people suffer from an increased bleeding tendency, another group struggles with the danger of thromboses.
If the formation of a blood clot obstructs the flow of blood, this can have life-threatening consequences.
The risk of such disorders is particularly increased after operations or during longer stays in hospital.
In physiotherapy, we use the "muscle pump" to activate the return flow through the vessels.
Through special movement exercises, we support the natural clotting process in such a way that the blood stays in motion and no dangerous plugs form.
We show you simple exercises that you can build into your everyday life independently to actively promote the health of your veins.
Safety in manual therapy: knowing what does you good
At NOVUM2, we place great value on a detailed history.
Before we begin with manual therapy techniques or massage, we clarify whether you are taking medication to inhibit platelets or whether there is a genetic defect in the clotting system.
This is decisive in order to avoid secondary bleeding or extensive bruises on the skin.
Our therapists are trained to adjust the pressure exactly.
We know that in female patients, for example during menstruation or pregnancy, the tissue can react differently.
Through this expertise, we minimise the risk of haematomas and ensure that the treatment is effective yet gentle on your vessels.
Should you be unsure, we are happy to consult with your treating haematology doctor.
Physiotherapy at NOVUM2: your safety net

Many patients are unsure: am I allowed to exert myself at all?
The NOVUM2 team says clearly: yes!
Precisely with a blood clotting disorder, targeted therapy is important.
Why movement is so valuable
Strong muscles are the best protection for your joints.
When we strengthen your musculature, we simultaneously stabilise the surrounding blood vessels and reduce the risk of spontaneous bleeds into the joints.
After operations in hospital, we help you lower the risk of dangerous blood clots through targeted mobilisation.
What we pay attention to during treatment
In physiotherapy, we weigh the risk precisely.
We adapt our techniques individually to your situation:
- Gentle manual techniques: We avoid strong pressure so as not to provoke secondary bleeding in the tissue.
- Medication in view: Are you taking medication such as anticoagulants, or do you need additional vitamin K? This information flows directly into your training plan.
- Targeted monitoring: We watch for warning signals from your body to avoid overloading.
Whether a genetic mutation is present or clotting is influenced by other illnesses – well-founded treatment greatly increases your quality of life.
Activity instead of standstill
A blood clotting disorder does not mean the end of an active lifestyle.
It is about finding the right balance: less unnecessary risk, more targeted strengthening.
We accompany this group of people with much experience and empathy.
