Epicondylitis describes a painful irritation at the origin of the forearm muscle tendons at the lateral (outer) or medial (inner) epicondyle of the upper arm bone.

The lateral form is colloquially known as tennis elbow and affects the tendons of the wrist extensors. The medial form, golfer's elbow, affects the wrist flexors. Complaints often occur with repeated gripping, lifting or twisting movements. Current literature prefers the term epicondylopathy, as it is predominantly an overload reaction.
