"Hexenschuss" is the German colloquial term for acute lumbago – a sudden, stabbing pain in the region of the lumbar spine without radicular radiation into the leg.
The pain often occurs after an unaccustomed movement, lifting or twisting, and is accompanied by reflex tension of the lumbar muscles. Movements, coughing and straining typically intensify the complaints. Most episodes subside within a few days to weeks with conservative treatment. Medical assessment is indicated especially when warning signs such as radiating pain, sensory disturbances or loss of strength occur.
