Tendinitis describes an inflammation-like irritation of a tendon. Frequently it is an overload reaction without classic signs of inflammation, which is why the term tendinopathy is increasingly used in the literature.
Typical complaints are load-dependent pain, tenderness to pressure and occasionally swelling in the area of the affected tendon. Common locations are the Achilles tendon, the patellar tendon and the tendons of the rotator cuff. Triggers are often repetitive loading, sporting overuse or a too rapid increase in training.
