Ultrasound treatment is a physical therapy procedure in which high-frequency mechanical vibrations are introduced into the tissue via a transducer head. Depending on the dosage, the sound waves produce thermal and mechanical effects in deeper tissue layers.
The transducer head is moved slowly over the treatment region with a contact medium (gel). Fields of application include muscular complaints, irritation of tendon and ligament attachments, chronic tension and post-operative irritation. Frequency, intensity and mode (continuous or pulsed) are selected according to the indication and tissue depth. Application is contraindicated over open wounds, growth plates or certain implants.
