Chiropractic is a manual form of therapy in which skilled hand techniques are used to treat complaints of the musculoskeletal system. The term derives from the Greek and roughly means "working with the hands".
A chiropractor looks for functional disorders, particularly of the spine, joints, muscles and tendons. Using targeted hand movements and techniques, they aim to release malpositions and restrictions that often cause pain.
Chiropractic assumes that many complaints, including some beyond the musculoskeletal system, can be triggered by disturbances of the spine and nerves. Treatment is intended to restore normal function.
Chiropractic can be particularly helpful for sudden problems such as a "locked" back. The manual techniques can often release tension faster than other measures such as heat or medication.
However, chiropractic is not suitable for everyone. In serious conditions such as tumours, inflammation or osteoporosis, this treatment should be avoided. When in doubt, it is always advisable to speak to your family doctor first.
