Electrotherapy comprises physical therapy procedures in which electrical current with defined parameters acts on the tissue. Direct current (galvanisation) as well as low-, medium- and high-frequency currents are used.
Fields of application include pain modulation, muscle stimulation for paralysis or atrophy, promotion of circulation, and iontophoresis for the local application of active substances. The choice of current form, frequency, pulse duration and intensity depends on the assessment and treatment goal. Contraindications such as cardiac pacemakers, metal implants in the current field or certain skin conditions are checked individually.
