Classic massage (Swedish massage) is a traditional physiotherapy procedure in which defined manual techniques act on the skin, connective tissue and muscles. It belongs to the manual procedures of physical therapy.

The classic techniques include effleurage (stroking), petrissage (kneading), frictions (rubbing), tapotement (percussion) and vibration. Massage is used for muscular tension, post-operative movement restrictions and as part of rehabilitation and wellness programmes. The choice of technique, pressure and duration depend on the assessment, symptoms and treatment goal.
