Proprioception is the perception of one's own body position, movement and muscle tension. It is mediated by specialised receptors in muscles, tendons, joints and connective tissue, whose information is relayed to the central nervous system.

Proprioception is the basis for balance, movement coordination, postural control and fine motor control. After injuries, operations or with chronic complaints, proprioceptive function can be impaired. In physiotherapy, it is addressed with targeted sensorimotor exercises, balance tasks and movement training on unstable surfaces.
