Muscle function testing according to Vladimir Janda is a systematic examination method for assessing the function of individual muscles and entire muscle chains. In the narrower sense, it comprises manual strength testing with standardised starting positions and a five- to six-level scale (0 to 5).
In addition, tests for typical movement patterns and muscular imbalances are described, such as the upper and lower crossed syndromes. Hip extension, shoulder abduction and trunk flexion, among others, are assessed for activation patterns and substitution movements. The findings feed into the planning of strengthening, stretching and stabilisation exercises.
