Stretching comprises exercises and techniques that specifically lengthen muscles, tendons and fasciae. The aim is to improve range of motion, muscle extensibility and general flexibility.

A distinction is made between static stretching (holding the end position), dynamic stretching (springing or swinging movements within the range of motion) and neuromuscular techniques such as contract-relax or hold-relax from the PNF concept. The choice, duration and intensity of the stretching technique are tailored individually based on assessment, goals and movement demands. In rehabilitation and sports physiotherapy, stretching is part of a comprehensive exercise programme.
