Goniometry is the measurement of joint angles and an established method for quantitatively recording range of motion in physiotherapy. It is usually performed with a goniometer along defined bony reference points.
Documentation generally follows the neutral-zero method, in which the neutral position is defined as the anatomical starting position and movement excursions in two directions are recorded with three values. In addition to the classic goniometer, digital goniometers and smartphone-based methods are used. Findings are comparable over time and support the evaluation of therapy progress.
