Range of motion (ROM) describes the movement range of a joint and is a central assessment parameter in physiotherapy. ROM is usually documented in degrees according to the neutral-zero method and can be recorded per movement plane.
A distinction is made between active range of motion (AROM), which the patient achieves independently, passive range of motion (PROM), guided by the therapist, and resisted range of motion. Differences between AROM and PROM, painful portions of movement and end-range movement quality (end-feel) provide clues to structural and functional findings.
