Extension is the straightening movement in a joint in which the angle between the bones involved increases. The term derives from the Latin extendere, "to stretch out".
Examples are straightening the elbow, extending the knee from a bent position or tilting the head backwards. Movement beyond the neutral position is called hyperextension. The muscles performing the movement are called extensors, for example the triceps brachii for elbow extension.
