Eccentric training describes a form of training in which the muscle lengthens under load, i.e. works in the yielding phase of a movement. Classic examples are slowly lowering a weight or lowering the heel from a step.
In physiotherapy, eccentric training is frequently used in the rehabilitation of tendon problems such as Achilles tendinopathy or lateral epicondylopathy. It is characterised by slow, controlled movements, moderate to high load, and a gradual progression of load over several weeks. Exercise selection, repetitions and intensity are tailored individually based on diagnosis, load tolerance and symptom course.
